The United Nations Maternal and Neonatal Mortality Reduction program progresses Millennium Development Goals 4 (Child Health) and 5 (Maternal Health) targets. This program, delivered jointly by UNFPA, UNICEF and WHO, contributes to reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. Australia's contribution will be for up-skilling midwives and doctors to provide safe deliveries, distribute a range of family planning commodities, train health workers on family planning, and teach doctors and midwives protocols to be implemented during the first hour after birth that improve a baby's chance of survival. The total value of this initiative is $12.2 million over 4 years, starting 2009-10.
