Building Disaster Resilience of Manila Communities (BRACE) contributes to lessening the vulnerability of urban poor to natural disaster through community based preparedness trainings, risk and exposure analysis, land use planning, and securing the safety of poor families living in hazard-prone areas. Approximately 9000 people will have safer in-city housing and 650,000 people given disaster preparedness trainings. Major drainage canals and waterways of vacated hazard-prone areas will be rehabilitated and risk sensitive land use plan will be adopted and enforced. BRACE intends to be a model of a good disaster risk reduction to be implemented in the pilot city of Taguig with technical assistance from Geoscience Australia and the Philippine Red Cross. The total value of this initiative is $27.2 million over 6 years, starting 2009-10.
