Malaria is controlled in many parts of the Philippines but remains highly endemic in some, including some very remote regions of the country. The program supported by this grant aims to reduce malaria-related illness and death by 70 percent by 2014 and to declare three provinces as malaria-free by 2014. The program will provide universal access to quality diagnostics and treatment services; scale up vector control to reach at least 59 percent protection of populations in malaria endemic areas; and strengthen sustainable, community-based malaria control and malaria surveillance and information systems. The program targets indigenous people; internally displaced persons, mobile populations; pregnant women; children under age 5; the elderly; and the general population living in areas where malaria transmission is present.
