Economic Governance Support

Support to Economic Governance Initiative (SEGI) is a continuation of the five-year Partnership for Economic Governance Reforms (PEGR) Initiative which ended in April 2010. SEGI is a two-year interim initiative that houses the few remaining reform activities of PEGR to meet our ongoing commitment to institutional reforms and capacity development critical to the World Bank's national roads improvement loan project. It transition support to the recently-mobilised Public Financial Management Program (PFMP). SEGI adopts PEGR's objectives: i) government agencies are better able to implement transparent and efficient budgets; and ii) improved accountability, transparency and management of investments in transport infrastructure. AusAID directly manages SEGI in collaboration with key implementing agencies. Key results of SEGI include enhanced institutional capacity and increased automation of financial management system in the public works department, one of the highest spending agencies in the government, and improved internal control and internal audit in the social welfare department, a key government partner of AusAID. The total value of this initiative is $8.0 million over 3 years, starting 2009-10.
