Avoidable Blindness Initiative

The Australian Government is committed to ensuring that the benefits of development reach those who are most excluded and, as such, people with a disability have been identified as a priority for Australia's aid program. This initiative specifically addresses the government's commitment to developing an avoidable blindness program. Funds will support a range of activities including: $15 million over 2 years in partnership with Vision 2020 Australia Global Consortium to expand existing eye and vision care in Asia and the Pacific; and $9.8 million over 3 years to strengthen training and capacity of eye health workers in Pacific, East Timor and PNG. The total value of this multi-country initiative is $38 million over 3 years, starting 2008-09.
