Tropical Storm Washi: Debris Clearing for Affected Communities in Northern Mindanao

The cluster aims to assist government units in 86 typhoon Washi affected barangays to clear and clean – up accumulated debris through cash for work schemes that will address the following: (a) reduce people’s exposure to health risks caused by unclean household and community environment , (b) provide life saving income support to 8,600 most needy households who will participate in the barangay – level debris clean-up, (c) strengthen the affected population’ coping capacity by engaging them in productive activities and (d) uphold the coordinative role of local government officials / mechanisms who will supervise the day-to-day conduct of the barangay clearing and cleaning operations. In particular, the project will have the following objectives: ¦ Clear and clean-up debris brought by typhoon Washi in 86 affected barangays in the cities of Cagayan and Iligan as well as in the provinces of Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte in Northern Mindanao. ¦ Provide 8,600 families with hand tools and personal protection equipment (included insurance) needed in debris clearing and clean-up. ¦ Provide emergency livelihood support to 8,600 survivor families in all the 86 affected barangays through cash-for-work. Up to 15 workdays will be provided for each beneficiary family.
